Love the nutty crunch of a sesame seed bagel? This homemade recipe delivers the perfect balance of crispy crust, chewy interior, and rich sesame flavor. Whether toasted with cream cheese, butter, or made into a gourmet sandwich, this bagel is a must-try! Follow this step-by-step guide to make bakery-style sesame bagels right at home.

  • Total Time: ~1 hour 40 minutes
  • Yield: 8 bagels 1x

Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients:

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Boiling Water Bath:

  • 8 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon honey (optional, for a slightly sweeter flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda (for extra chewiness)

Topping:

  • ½ cup sesame seeds (raw or toasted)
  • 1 egg white + 1 tablespoon water (optional, for an egg wash)

Instructions

Prepare the Dough:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve sugar and yeast in warm water. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add salt, oil, and half of the flour. Mix until combined.
  3. Gradually add the rest of the flour, kneading for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Shape the Bagels:

  1. Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
  2. Roll each piece into a ball, then poke a hole in the center and gently stretch into a ring shape.
  3. Place shaped bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rest for 15 minutes.

Boil the Bagels:

  1. Bring 8 cups of water to a boil in a large pot. Add honey and baking soda (optional).
  2. Carefully drop 2–3 bagels at a time into the boiling water. Boil for 30–45 seconds per side, then remove with a slotted spoon.

Coat with Sesame Seeds & Bake:

  1. Brush boiled bagels with egg wash (optional) and dip them into sesame seeds to coat evenly.
  2. Place bagels on a lined baking sheet and bake at 425°F (220°C) for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  3. Let cool on a wire rack before serving. Enjoy!

Notes

✅ For a crispier crust, bake an extra 3-5 minutes.
✅ For a vegan version, skip the egg wash and use water instead.
✅ To store, keep in an airtight container for 2 days at room temp or freeze for up to 3 months.
✅ Reheat by toasting or baking at 350°F (175°C) for 5 minutes.
