Dough Ingredients:
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Boiling Water Bath:
- 8 cups water
- 1 tablespoon honey (optional, for a slightly sweeter flavor)
- 1 teaspoon baking soda (for extra chewiness)
Topping:
- ½ cup sesame seeds (raw or toasted)
- 1 egg white + 1 tablespoon water (optional, for an egg wash)
Instructions
Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, dissolve sugar and yeast in warm water. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- Add salt, oil, and half of the flour. Mix until combined.
- Gradually add the rest of the flour, kneading for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Shape the Bagels:
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
- Roll each piece into a ball, then poke a hole in the center and gently stretch into a ring shape.
- Place shaped bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rest for 15 minutes.
Boil the Bagels:
- Bring 8 cups of water to a boil in a large pot. Add honey and baking soda (optional).
- Carefully drop 2–3 bagels at a time into the boiling water. Boil for 30–45 seconds per side, then remove with a slotted spoon.
Coat with Sesame Seeds & Bake:
- Brush boiled bagels with egg wash (optional) and dip them into sesame seeds to coat evenly.
- Place bagels on a lined baking sheet and bake at 425°F (220°C) for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Let cool on a wire rack before serving. Enjoy!
Notes
✅ For a crispier crust, bake an extra 3-5 minutes.
✅ For a vegan version, skip the egg wash and use water instead.
✅ To store, keep in an airtight container for 2 days at room temp or freeze for up to 3 months.
